MONUMENT VALLEY
(Wiedersehen mit Jaegerspris / Eine Hommage an Johannes Wiedewelt) eine einfache Ausstellung von Vorschlägen für Denkmäler von zeitgenössischen Künstler/-innen, zusammengetragen und arrangiert von Andreas Schlaegel.
Jaegerspris ist ein kleines königliches Jagdschloss, das ungefähr eine Stunde von Kopenhagen entfernt liegt, umgeben von Landschaftspark und Wald. Doch hier befinden sich auch 54 Denkmäler, die an Errungenschaften bedeutender dänischer Persönlichkeiten erinnern sollen und zwischen 1777 und 1802 von Johannes Wiedewelt entworfen wurden. Als ein nordisches Pantheon konzipiert, ist das Ensemble von der engen Freundschaft und dem intensiven Austausch des Künstlers mit Johannes Winckelmann während der gemeinsam verbrachten Zeit in Rom beeinflusst, wie auch dem Ringen Dänemarks um eine eigene nationale Identität. Als Skulpturen reflektieren diese Arbeiten nicht nur eine Abkehr des Künstlers von barocker Opulenz und eine Hinwendung zu neoklassizistischer Klarheit und Minimalismus. Vielmehr schlagen sie überhaupt ganz neue Töne an, die bis in die Gegenwart hallen: indem sie historische Persönlichkeiten nicht figurativ, sondern in formalistischen Allegorien porträtieren, erreichen diese Arbeiten einen Abstraktionsgrad, der zeitgenössische Vorstellungen von Postmoderne heraufbeschwört – durch die Adaption skulpturaler Formen und dekorativer architektonischer Elemente und nicht zuletzt durch die idiosynkratische Platzierung der Arbeiten in der Landschaft.
Heute haben sich die Anforderungen an öffentliche Denkmäler nicht grundlegend geändert, vorausgesetzt, dass man die Vorstellung akzeptiert, dass Kunst überhaupt eine solche Funktion wie die eines Denkmals erfüllen kann. Aber wie, wem oder welcher Errungenschaft sind Denkmäler im modernen, vereinten Europa zu widmen? Wie diese gestalten, so dass sie Mitmenschen heute Sinn stiften? Wo verorten und was warum ausschließen oder hervorheben in unseren kulturellen Landschaften?
UFO PRESENTS
UFO presents ist ein zeitgenössisches Ausstellungsprojekt und hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, einen Ort für kuratierte Ausstellungen in Berlin zu etablieren. UFO presents wurde als Gruppenprojekt von den dänischen Künstler/-innen Dorte Buchwald und Søren Martinsen in Zusammenarbeit mit Katrin Glinka und Kristina Valborg Valberg gegründet. UFO presents reflektiert die signifikante Rolle, die Berlin im zeitgenössischen Kunstfeld einnimmt und agiert im Bewusstsein, dass nicht nur viele skandinavische Künstler/-innen, sondern Künstler/-innen aus der ganzen Welt Berlin als Ort zum Leben und Arbeiten gewählt haben. Der „UnderForeign Occupation“ stehende Ausstellungsraum und der augenzwinkernd gesetzte Name UFO presents, dienen als Ausgangspunkt für einen Dialog zwischen Künstler/-innen, Kurator/-innen und Theoretiker/-innen in Berlin, während die eigene Position und Rolle im Kunstfeld hinterfragt wird. UFO presents bietet eine Plattform für Interaktion und bildet und unterstützt damit ein produktives Netzwerk und einen Austausch unter allen Beteiligten. UFO presents lädt Künstler/-innen, Kurator/-innen und Theoretiker/-innen dazu ein, ihre Projekte und Ausstellungen in diesem Rahmen zu realisieren, ohne dabei den Fokus auf die jeweils zugesprochene „Rolle“ der Beteiligten zu legen.
Als ein Projekt, das nicht an einen festen Raum oder Ort gebunden ist, wird die Situation des „neu in der Stadt seins“ bewusst reflektiert – herumziehen, nach dem „richtigen“ Ort zum Bleiben suchen, nach einem Ort, der den Bedürfnissen entspricht. Damit verleihen wir gleichzeitig den Umständen Ausdruck, denen sich nicht nur Kunstprojekte und Ausstellungsräume in den sich fortlaufend verändernden Strukturen einer Stadt wie Berlin ausgesetzt sehen: die Geschwindigkeit, in der sich die Stadt entwickelt und verändert, fordert von den Menschen, die in ihr leben und arbeiten, fortlaufend eine Anpassung an neue Situationen, Plätze und Voraussetzungen. Diese Perspektive, am Anfang des Projektes nicht an einen festen Raum gebunden und beschränkt zu sein, bietet die Möglichkeit, sich die gegebenen Umstände zu eigen zu machen und sie gleichzeitig auf einem künstlerischen wie auch theoretischen Level kritisch zu hinterfragen. Für die ersten Ausstellungen wird UFO presents in einem Souterrain in Kreuzberg verortet sein und im Laufe des Projektes an andere Orte ziehen. Vom Untergrund bis hoch über die Dächer der Stadt – UFO presents ist bereit, die verschiedensten Orte zu besetzen, während die Stadt und ihre facettenreichen Strukturen als produktive Herausforderung angenommen werden.

MONUMENT VALLEY
(Jaegerspris revisited / A homage to Johannes Wiedewelt) presents a casual display of proposals for monuments by contemporary artists arranged and compiled by artist and critic Andreas Schlaegel.
Jaegerspris is a small royal hunting castle, surrounded by a park and a forest – a rather obscure landscape park about an hour from Copenhagen. It features 54 monuments scattered throughout the area, commemorating the achievements of great Danish personalities of the time, executed and compiled between 1777 and 1802 by Johannes Wiedewelt. Conceived as a Nordic pantheon, it is influenced by the sculptor‘s close friendship and intense exchange with Johannes Winckelmann during their time in Rome, as much as by the struggle for a national identity of his own country. As sculptures, his monuments reflect not only the abandonment of baroque opulence for neoclassicist clarity and minimalism, they strike more chords than one with the contemporary viewer: by commemorating historic personalities not in figure but in formalist allegories, his works reach levels of abstraction that foreshadow contemporary notions of postmodernism, as in their adaptation of sculptural form and decorative architectural elements, as well as by their idiosyncratic placement in the landscape.
Today, the elementary questions haven‘t changed much: whom and what to create monuments for in modern day Europe? How to create these in a way that makes sense today and where to place them? How to relate to our cultural landscape, and what and why to include or exclude from it?
UFO PRESENTS
UFO presents is an exhibition project that focuses on international contemporary art and is aiming at establishing a place for curated exhibitions in Berlin. UFO presents is a group project and was funded by the Danish artists Dorte Buchwald and Søren Martinsen in collaboration with Katrin Glinka and Kristina Valborg Valberg. In regard to the significant role that Berlin takes up in the contemporary art field and emphasizing the fact that not only many Scandinavian artists but also artists from all other parts of the world have chosen Berlin as their desired place to work and live in, UFO presents will reflect and act upon these premises. Thus, offering a space that is run “Under Foreign Occupation” and using this tongue-in-cheek name as a starting point in order to create a dialogue between international artists, curators and theoreticians in Berlin, we also scrutinise our own position and role in the art field. UFO presents offers a platform for interaction with artists, curators and theoreticians and by that creates and supports a productive network and exchange between all participants. UFO presents invites artists, curators or theoreticians to realise their projects in this framework without putting the emphasis on the assigned “role” of the participants.
As a project that is not limited to a physical space or a fixed room, the project actively reflects upon the situation of “being new in town“ – moving around, looking for the “right” place to stay, looking for a space that fits all needs. At the same time, we thereby give utterance to the circumstances that not only art projects and exhibition spaces have to face in the ever changing structure of a city like Berlin: the pace in which the city is developing and changing constantly challenges the people living and working there to adapt to new situations, places and premises. This perspective of not being limited to one fixed room right at the beginning offers the possibility to embrace the given circumstances as well as to critically scrutinise them on an artistical as well as theoretical level. For the first few exhibitions, UFO presents will be located in a souterrain space in Kreuzberg and move to other places in the course of the project. From the underground to high above the roofs of the city – UFO presents is ready to occupy almost every space, taking the city and its multifaceted structures as a productive challenge.
